Mayor's Book Club to Focus on Electric Safety
As part of a community education effort during National Electric Safety Month in May, Longmont Power & Communications (LPC) is sponsoring an installment of the Mayor’s Book Club. This ongoing activity, produced by the City’s Division of Children & Youth Resources, distributes free, bilingual books to three and four year old children who are book club members. Their participation builds pre-literacy skills and increases their school readiness.

During the televised program, Mayor Dennis Coombs will be reading the English language version of “The Magic School Bus and the Electric Field Trip” by Joanna Cole, and Councilman Brian Bagley will be reading the Spanish language version of “Electricidad” by Helen Taylor. Between the readings, LPC’s Operations Support and Training Specialist, Daryl Steiner, will talk to the children and their parents about electrical safety information for young families.

Throughout May, these books will be mailed to nearly 600 book club members and the program will be available for viewing on TV’s Channel 8 (The Longmont Channel). It will also be available online at the Longmont Channel’s website, www.longmontchannel.org.

Three and four year olds throughout Longmont can become a Mayor’s Book Club member and receive free books at no cost, until they are five years old. To register, residents should visit www.ci.longmont.co.us/youth_services. Registration forms are also available at the O.U.R. Center, Salud Family Health Center in Longmont, at Boulder County Public Health/WIC and at the Longmont Public Library.

For more information about becoming a member or sponsoring a month of books, contact Linda Kopecky at linda.kopecky@ci.longmont.co.us or call 303-774-3762. Se habla espanol.
